Tesla to expand German factory, start clearing surrounding forest

Late on October 28, Tesla began clearing a forest in Germany to expand its Berlin Gigafactory, a key component of its European growth plan, media reported.

Earlier on October 29, a Tesla spokesperson confirmed a report by Maerkische Onlinezeitung that Tesla was applying to expand storage and logistics capacity at the Berlin Gigafactory. The spokesman also said that Tesla has begun clearing about 70 hectares of woods for the expansion of the factory.

It is reported that Tesla has previously revealed that it hopes to expand the factory by about 100 hectares, adding a freight yard and warehouse to strengthen the railway connection of the factory and increase the storage of parts.

“I’m delighted that Tesla will continue to move forward with the factory expansion,” Brandenburg State Economy Minister Joerg Steinbach also tweeted. “Our country is developing into a modern mobility country.”

It’s unclear how long it will take for the massive expansion project at Tesla’s factory to land. Large-scale expansion projects in the area require approval from the environmental protection department and start a consultation process with local residents. Previously, some local residents had complained that the factory used too much water and threatened local wildlife.

After months of delays, Tesla CEO Elon Musk finally delivered the first 30 Model Ys produced at the factory to customers in March. The company last year complained that the repeated delays in final approval of the plant were “irritating” and said red tape was slowing Germany’s industrial transformation.
