On November 11, Tesla announced that it would open the charging gun design to the world, inviting charging network operators and automakers to jointly use Tesla’s standard charging design.
Tesla’s charging gun has been used for more than 10 years, and its cruising range has exceeded 20 billion miles. It is the most mature charging pile standard in North America.
In a slim package, the Tesla Charger can provide AC charging and DC charging of up to 1 megawatt. It has no superfluous design, is half the size of the common standard CCS used in the US and EU, and has twice the power.
While announcing the opening of the charging gun design, Tesla also renamed the gun head standard to NACS, which is really a god name! The meaning of targeting CCS is already very obvious!
According to Tesla data, the number of cars using NACS guns in North America now exceeds half of that of CCS, and Tesla’s NACS charging piles are 60% more than all CCS charging piles combined.
Tesla says there are charging network operators already planning to accelerate NACS in their charging piles, so Tesla owners can expect to use other charging networks without adapters. Likewise, Tesla is looking forward to future EVs featuring the NACS design and charging at Tesla Supercharger and destination charging stations.
Now, Tesla has begun to provide downloads of relevant design files.
