A few days ago, Zhang Shengshan, executive deputy general manager of Chery International, said that Chery plans to enter the British market in 2026 and launch a series of plug-in hybrid and pure electric models. At the same time, Chery recently announced that it will return to the Australian market after a lapse of 7 years. Zhang Shengshan told the Australian media that “it has laid the foundation for its entry into the British market.”
Although Zhang has not yet confirmed which models Chery will export to the UK, Zhang Shengshan said that the Australian market is a touchstone, and Chery plans to launch plug-in hybrid and pure electric models in the UK.
Australia matters not just because of its right-hand drive. “It’s a highly developed market with regulations similar to those of the European Union. So it’s an important test market for the UK,” said Zhang Shengshan, who oversees Chery’s Omoda 5 exports.
Chery has also recently launched models such as Chery Tiggo and Arrizo for new export markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Turkey, and South Africa. According to previous news, Chery Automobile will join hands with the Huawei brand to create a new high-end new energy brand.
Chery’s high-end new energy brand has currently planned at least 5 pure electric models. The two models launched in the early stage are the medium-sized sedan E03 and the SUV model E0Y. The specific details will be officially announced in early 2023.
Chery’s January- October 2022 sales rose 38.8% from 2021 to 1,026,758 units. Among them, sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and pure electric vehicles were 207,893.
