According to foreign media reports, BYD Auto is negotiating with the Bahia state government of Brazil to acquire Ford’s factory that will cease operations in January 2021.
Adalberto Maluf, director of marketing and sustainable development of BYD’s Brazilian subsidiary, said that BYD invested about 2.5 billion reais (about 3.3 billion yuan) in the VLT project in Bahia. If the acquisition is successfully completed, BYD may The corresponding models are produced locally in Brazil.
It is worth mentioning that last year, BYD officially entered the passenger car field in Brazil. At present, BYD has 9 stores in Brazil. It is expected to open business in 45 cities by the end of this year and set up 100 stores by the end of 2023.
In October, BYD signed a letter of intent with the government of the state of Bahia to produce cars in an industrial area left after Ford closed its factory in the suburbs of Salvador.
According to the Bahia state government (Northeast), BYD will build three new factories in the local area, which will be responsible for manufacturing the chassis of electric buses and electric trucks, processing lithium and iron phosphate, and manufacturing pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Among them, the factory for manufacturing pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles is expected to be completed in December 2024 and will be put into operation from January 2025.
According to the plan, by 2025, BYD’s electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles will account for 10% of the total sales of Brazil’s electric vehicle market; by 2030, its share in the Brazilian market will increase to 30%.
