What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen energy vehicles compared with pure electric vehicles?

Introduction: In the past ten years, due to environmental changes, automobiles have developed in three major directions: fuel oil, pure electric vehicles, and fuel cells, while pure electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel vehicles currently only belong to “niche” groups. But it can’t stop the possibility that they may replace gasoline vehicles in the future, so which is better, pure electric vehicles or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles? Which one will become the mainstream in the future?

  1. In terms of energy full time

  The charging time of a hydrogen car is very short, less than 5 minutes. Even the current super charging pile electric vehicle takes about half an hour to charge a pure electric vehicle;

 2. In terms of cruising range

  The cruising range of hydrogen fuel vehicles can reach 650-700 kilometers, and some models can even reach 1,000 kilometers, which is currently impossible for pure electric vehicles;

3. Production technology and cost

  Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles only generate air and water during operation, and there is no fuel cell recycling problem, which is very environmentally friendly. Although electric vehicles do not use fuel, have zero emissions, and only transfer pollution emissions, because coal-fired thermal power accounts for a very high proportion of China’s electricity energy mix. Although centralized power generation is more efficient and pollution problems are easier to reduce, strictly speaking, electric vehicles are not absolutely environmentally friendly unless their electricity comes from wind, solar and other clean energy sources. Also, the recycling of spent batteries for EV batteries is a big issue. Pure electric vehicles do not pollute, but they also have indirect pollution, that is, environmental pollution caused by thermal power generation. However, in terms of the current production and technical costs of hydrogen fuel vehicles and electric vehicles, the technology and structure of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are very complex. Hydrogen fuel vehicles mainly rely on hydrogen and oxidation reaction to generate electricity to drive the engine, and require precious metal platinum as a catalyst, which greatly increases the cost, so the cost of pure electric vehicles is relatively low.

4. Energy efficiency

  Hydrogen vehicles are less efficient than electric vehicles. Industry experts calculate that once an electric car starts, the power supply at the charging position of the car will lose about 5%, the battery charge and discharge will increase by 10%, and finally the motor will lose 5%. Calculate the total loss as 20%. The hydrogen fuel vehicle integrates the charging device in the vehicle, and the final driving method is the same as that of the pure electric vehicle, which is driven by the electric motor. According to relevant tests, if 100 kWh of electricity is used to generate hydrogen, then it is stored, transported, added to the vehicle, and then converted into electricity to drive the motor, the electricity utilization rate is only 38%, and the utilization rate is only 57%. So no matter how you calculate it, it is far lower than electric cars.

  To sum up, with the rapid development of new energy vehicles , hydrogen energy vehicles and electric vehicles have their own advantages and disadvantages. Electric vehicles are the current trend. Because hydrogen-powered vehicles have many advantages, although they may not replace electric vehicles in the future, they will develop synergistically.
